**Brent is trading $116-117 on headlines (feed shows $111.70) as Saudi attacks and a possible early-November Iran strike put $120 in play, and with OVX at 60 the path is violent but upward.**

## Key levels

- Brent: support 108, resistance 117
- WTI: support 100, resistance 105

## Price Action & Technicals

> Buy dips toward $108 Brent and respect $117; a clean break targets $120 within days.

**Brent is a headline-led breakout, and the data feed is lagging it.** The package prints Brent at **$111.70** (+1.96% on the session, **+3.64%** over 5 days, 5d range $105.95-$114.67). Wire reports have futures above **$116-117**, a six-month high, so the screen is ahead of our close. That also explains the spread: yesterday's record **$13.63** Brent-WTI gap now reads **$8.43** on the feed. Trade the headline levels and treat the feed Brent number as stale.

**WTI is the stronger leg on a 5-day view.** It sits at **$103.27** (-0.38% on the day, **+6.00%** over 5 days, 5d high $103.92) and has pushed above $103 intraday. Domestic crude is catching up to the seaborne premium instead of staying in a glut.

**Volatility is the loudest signal.** OVX jumped **18.29%** to **60.02**, a 5d high of 60.63 against a low of 50.41. At that level a $4-5 daily Brent move is routine, so size positions accordingly.

## Supply & Inventories

> The US is drawing crude and the SPR with no rig response; Cushing's 1.0M build is the only brake on WTI.

**US balance sheets are tightening at the margin, not loosening.** Crude stocks fell **3.1M bbl** to **412.5M** in the week to Oct 16. Refinery utilization is **93.4%** and production is **13.27M bbl/d**. Exports at **3.4M bbl/d** are being squeezed by record tanker rates, with a roughly **$80M** cost to charter a Pacific voyage pushing US crude flows to Asia toward a seven-year low.

**Cushing is the one soft spot.** Stocks rose **1.0M** to **27.6M bbl** (35th percentile, z=-0.7), which caps WTI front-spread upside. The **SPR at 282.7M bbl** (-0.3M w/w) is being tapped again to keep a Louisiana refinery running, a sign Washington is managing physical tightness.

**Demand proxies are mixed.** Gasoline supplied rose **0.6M** to **9.0M bbl/d**, while distillate supplied fell **0.6M** to **3.7M bbl/d** (seasonal z=-0.9). The rig count is flat for a second week, so there is no US supply response to $100+ oil. EIA's STEO has Brent at **$111** for October, in line with the market, and **$72** by December 2027.

## Geopolitics & Disruptions

> Early November is the hard catalyst; physical softness in Mideast crude is the only credible fade argument.

**Saudi infrastructure is now in the line of fire, and that is the driver.** Escalating attacks on Saudi Arabia and Saudi-Houthi tensions sent Brent up more than **3%** on Oct 23. OGJ calls it a dual-front war. Trump's signal of no further Iran strikes before the midterms has not calmed the region.

**The next escalation window is early November.** US and Israeli forces are reportedly assembling and rehearsing strikes for a possible new round on Iran. That puts a hard date inside the market's horizon and argues against selling rallies.

**Physical markets are sending a contradictory signal.** Middle East physical crudes sold outside the Gulf softened this week as ship-to-ship flows out of the Persian Gulf continue. That limits how much of the futures move is real scarcity today, and it is the main bear counterargument. Washington is also easing product tightness: a six-month waiver lets Russian diesel into the global market, and the first cargo is en route to New York with a Norfolk arrival expected **November 2**. Retail diesel is **$6.30/gal** and EU diesel and jet supplies remain tight.

## Positioning & Flows

> Positioning is supportive but stale; expect the next COT to show net length rebuilding above 100K.

**Funds are long but not crowded, so there is room to add.** Money managers hold **178,884 longs** against **76,978 shorts**, a net speculative position of **101,906** as of Oct 20, roughly a 2.3:1 long/short ratio. Open interest fell **73,685** to **2.50M** contracts.

**That CFTC snapshot predates the Oct 22-23 leg higher.** Net length is likely larger now. Falling open interest into the rally points to short covering over fresh buying, so the move has less committed capital behind it than the headlines imply.

**Regulatory risk is building.** CFTC scrutiny of **6M barrels sold in two minutes** on March 23, ahead of a Trump policy reversal, is a reminder that headline-driven flows draw enforcement attention and can chill liquidity around announcements.

## Macro, Curve & Products

> Favor front-month length and distillate strength; a 4.96% 10-year and strong dollar are the ceiling if geopolitics cools.

**The curve says the market is pricing a temporary shock.** Brent runs from **$111.70** at the front, flat to Jan 27, to **$100.86** in Apr 27 and **$89.11** in Oct 27, a **-20.2%** backwardation. WTI falls **19.9%** to **$82.69**. Steep backwardation rewards holding physical barrels and punishes rolling longs, so prefer front-end exposure.

**Product cracks are screaming diesel tightness.** The 3-2-1 crack is **$51.34/bbl**, with the distillate crack at **$97.78** and the gasoline crack at **$28.12** (both vs WTI). Heating oil at **$4.787/gal** fell **2.71%** on the day but is up **3.67%** over 5 days. Refiners are earning extreme margins, which supports crude runs and pulls in crude demand.

**Macro is no help to bulls.** The US Dollar Index is **121.40**, the 10-year yield is **4.96%** and the Fed funds rate is **3.75%**. Natural gas at **$3.05/MMBtu** (-0.97% over 5 days) is decoupled, weighed down by warm forecasts and weak autumn demand. This is a geopolitical oil rally, not a macro one.

## What to watch

- Weekend Saudi/Houthi strike headlines ahead of Sunday-evening Globex open
- US/Israeli Iran strike preparations for early November, with the window opening around Nov 2
- EIA weekly petroleum status Wednesday 10:30 ET: Cushing after the 1.0M build and the SPR drawdown pace
- CFTC COT Friday: whether net specs rebuild above 101,906 after the Oct 22-23 rally
- Russian diesel cargo arrival at Norfolk on Nov 2 and New York after, as a test of the US distillate crack near $98

## Risks to the view

- Iran/Saudi escalation closing or choking Gulf export flows, taking Brent through $120 (likely)
- De-escalation or a Trump-brokered pause collapsing the risk premium and the 20% backwardation, with Brent back toward $105 (possible)
- Coordinated SPR release or sharp regulatory action on trading flows triggering a fast, volatile unwind (tail risk)

## Outlook

Brent is biased higher toward $117-120 over the next 1-2 weeks, with the early-November Iran strike window as the catalyst and the $108 area as the floor. With OVX at 60, expect $4-5 daily swings. A weak physical Mideast market is the one thing that could stall the rally, so buy dips, not breakouts.
